The isolated neutron star RBS1774 revisited Revised XMM-Newton X-ray parameters and an optical counterpart from deep LBT-observations

چکیده
We report optical B-band observations with the Large Binocular Telescope LBT of the isolated neutron star RBS1774. The stacked image with total exposure 2. h5 reveals a candidate optical counterpart at mB = 26.96 ± 0.20 at position α(2000) = 21h43m03. s40, δ(2000) = +06◦54′17. ′′5, within the joint Chandra and XMM-Newton error circles. We analyse archival XMM-Newton observations and derive revised spectral and positional parameters. The predicted optical flux from the extrapolated X-ray spectrum is likely twice as high as reported before. The measured optical flux exceeds the extrapolated X-ray spectral flux by a factor ∼ 40 (15 – 60 at 1σ confidence). We interpret our detection and the spectral energy distribution as further evidence of a temperature structure over the neutron star’s surface and present a pure thermal model reflecting both the SED and the pulsed fraction of the light curve.

Unveiling the nature of RX J0002+6246 with XMM-Newton
The X-ray source RX J0002+6246 was discovered close to the supernova remnant CTB 1 in a ROSAT observation performed in 1992. The source phenomenology (soft spectrum, apparent lack of counterparts, possible pulsations at 242 ms, hints for surrounding diffuse emission) led to interpret it as an isolated neutron star in a new supernova remnant. We have analysed an archival XMM-Newton observation p...
متن کاملConstraining the neutron star equation of state using XMM - Newton
We have identified three possible ways in which future XMM-Newton observations can provide significant constraints on the equation of state of neutron stars. First, using a long observation of the neutron star X-ray transient Cen X–4 in quiescence one can use the RGS spectrum to constrain the interstellar extinction to the source. This removes this parameter from the X-ray spectral fitting of t...
متن کاملThe thermal radiation of the isolated neutron star RX J1856.5–3754 observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton
We present results of the analysis of data collected in 57-ks XMM-Newton and 505-ks Chandra observations of the nearby (≃ 120 pc) isolated neutron star RXJ1856.5–3754. We confirm most of the statements made by Burwitz et al. (2001) who discussed the original 55-ks Chandra data. Detailed spectral analysis of the combined X-ray and optical data rules out the currently available nonmagnetic light ...
متن کاملLost and Found: a New Position and Infrared Counterpart for the X-ray Binary
Using archival X-ray data, we find that the catalog location of the X-ray binary Scutum X-1 (Sct X1) is incorrect, and that the correct location is that of the X-ray source AX J183528−0737, which is 15 to the west. Our identification is made on the basis of the 112-s pulse period for this object detected in an XMM-Newton observation, as well as spatial coincidence between AX J183528−0737 and pr...
متن کاملSpectral and temporal variations of the isolated neutron star RX J0720.4−3125: new XMM-Newton observations
Context. In the past, the isolated, radio-quiet neutron star RX J0720.4−3125 showed variations in its spectral parameters (apparent radius, temperature of the emitting area and equivalent width of the absorption feature) seen in the X-ray spectra, not only during the spin period of 8.39 s, but also over time scales of years. New X-ray observations of RX J0720.4−3125 with XMM-Newton extend the c...
